Researchers note an uptick in political violence in the United States in the 2020s. Speaking to Reuters in 2023, University of Maryland criminologist Gary LaFree said political violence was at the worst level since the 1970s. Mike Jensen of the University of Maryland, which has tracked political violence since the 1970s, said that 2025 experienced 150 politically-motivated attacks in the first six months, almost twice as many as there were at the same point in 2024. According to Reuters, there were about 300 acts of political violence in the United States from the January 6 attacks to the 2024 election. A paper by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, published in 2023, reported that three times more violent political acts and plots had been carried out since 2016 than in the last 25 years.

A Princeton University study reported that the number of cases involving harassment and threats against local public officials had increased 74% in 2024 compared with 2022, totaling 600 cases.[28] In 2022, supreme court justice Brett Kavanaugh was the target of an assassination plot due to his position on the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
A pipe bomb was placed near the DNC building during the January 6 attacks. Vice-president Kamala Harris was driven 20 feet near one of them.
In September 2025, political commentator Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a public debate in Utah.

Following this, historian Mark K. Updegrove warned that political violence and rhetoric in the 2020s mirrored that of the 1960s.

Other acts linked to the rise in violence included the U.S. Capitol being stormed by Trump supporters in January 2021, the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the 2022 hammer assault against Paul Pelosi, the attempted assassination of Louisville then-mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg, the attempted assassinations of Donald Trump in Pennsylvania and Florida in 2024, the 2025 arson at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's home, and the assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband.According to the research, that was the largest surge since the 1970s...

I have predicted this as the first and most obvious feature since Trump's re-election, however, there is no definitive proof of neither causation, nor its absence. The GOP mutation into MAGA is just clearly aimed on the "return of good ol' times" and seems to me that Hippie Revolution is just a step on the road to 1700s, what do you tink?

Trump blamed the "radical left" for Kirk's death, saying they "compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis." Fox News host Jesse Watters said, "They are at war with us," as well as commenting, "We're going to avenge Charlie's death in the way he would want it avenged."[Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida reportedly shouted expletives toward the Democrats, including "You fucking caused this." Elon Musk, Christopher Rufo, Representative Derrick Van Orden, and Blake Masters blamed the left for the attack. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his prayers for Kirk through a post on X. Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán offered their condolences and condemned the shooting.Argentine president Javier Milei sent his condolences[83], as did Polish president Karol Nawrocki. Former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev condemned the attack and blamed Kirk's killing on U.S. support for Ukraine!

Turning Point and members of the MAGA movement called for the cancelation of American animated sitcom South Park, accusing the show of inciting hatred and violence against Kirk due to the episode "Got a Nut" parodying Kirk through Eric Cartman... American cable channel Comedy Central withdrew reruns of "Got a Nut" from syndication due to the parody of Kirk shortly after his death.

Within hours of the shooting, FBI director Kash Patel announced on social media that "the subject" in Kirk's killing was "now in custody," Within two hours of Patel's initial announcement, he stated the subject had been "released after an interrogation by law enforcement." Authorities later indicated that neither of the arrested individuals was the shooter.

President Trump ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff until that Sunday at 6 p.m. in Kirk's honor; he later released a video tribute to Kirk. Trump announced on September 11, 2025, that he would be posthumously awarding Kirk with the Medal of Freedom.

MSNBC fired analyst Matthew Dowd following comments characterized by network president Rebecca Kutler as "inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable." While on air, Dowd had said of Kirk, "He's been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions."

В Le Monde вышла статья "How Trump broke with his strategic allies to side with Russia over Ukraine"
